This page is dedicated to the History of the Disabled Veteran's Rest Camp
The camp started as a local farm which was donated to the Disabled Veterans of World War One. It was incorporated in 1926, Orginally with the main farm house was converted to a dormitory type of rooming house for the shell shocked veterans. Several of the existing cabins were the quarters for the ground manager and staff. The Camp was Incorporated as The Disabled American Veterans Rest Camp.
The Disabled American Veterans of Chapter Two Ramsey County ran the camp through the 30's and 40's and after the ending of World War Two the Chapter invited representation from the VFW and Legion Districts of Ramsey. The board configuration of 3 representatives from each of the organizations existed of many years. In 1948 the Board Dropped the American from the Camp name to Disabled Veterans Rest Camp. I have been researching to find who moved the first camping trailer on site.

In 1982, The Board dropped the word Disabled from the Camp name. Thus the name became Veterans Rest Camp. During the late Seventies, the word Disabled on the camp name because it was assumed to mean that it was restricted to the Service Connected Disabled Veterans. The Board of Directors still stands to serve the service connected disablity as the first priority, but is open to all members of the Armed Forces who served with an Honorable discharge.
In 1986 the main house was deemed beyond repair and was removed. This left the orginal 12 cabins for rental purposes. The was a few RV sites during this period and it now has expanded to allow 80 RV sites. The last expansion being in the fall of 2000.
The Board of Directors changed the name back to the Disabled Veterans Rest Camp in the Spring of 2004. The priority of service going to the service connected disabled Armerican Service Men and Women, and open to all Veterans of military of the United States.
Camping Season 2003 was a very busy season. The camp had over 25,000 registered Veterans, their guests and families. Ten post organizations had their picnics on site. Six Veteran home and hospital outings at the camp were done. These outings have the veterans in the home transported to the camp for a day of fishing or boat rides followed by a BBQ. One of the main projects for the year was the Korean Veteran Memorial Trail. Additionally, the following were accomplished; a new playground was installed in an area where the children can play without any traffic around, a new stretch of blacktop from the cabins to the canteen has been layed for better wheel chair access through the camp, the office area parking area was also done. Cabin renovations was accomplished. Several Military organizations held their Bass fishing contests on the lake.
